Employ more midwives for the Tamworth Midwifery Group Practice now!

Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital urgently needs more midwives for the maternity ward and the Midwifery Group Practice (continuity of care programme). While we applaud the hospital's long overdue decision to employ more staff for the maternity ward, we disagree with the decision to suspend MGP simply because it is staffed insufficiently.

The MGP provides the families of our region the safest form of care at the lowest cost. Our hospital and our community cannot afford to lose it. The hospital's planned 'hiatus' of the MGP will expose the women and babies of Tamworth to higher risk unnecessarily and we are concerned it will become a permanent closure.

We ask Chief Executive of HNE Health Michael DiRienzo & Kevin Anderson MP to:

  • commit to filling all vacant midwifery positions in the MGP immediately
  • reverse the decision to suspend the MGP
  • partner with their community in the design, implementation and review of their maternity services, as per their Standard 2: Partnering with consumers obligations.

Yours Sincerely,

Friends of Tamworth Midwifery Services
