On December 22, 2017, Canada's Criminal Code was finally amended to acknowledge Hate Crimes as distinct from other criminal acts.
HATE CRIMES occur because bias (towards a victim based on the victim's race, religion, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or disability) is the reason for the crime. HATE VIOLENCE is intentionally, specifically targeted at individuals because of their personal characteristics. These very personal crimes have very emotional and psychological impact on the victim and the victim's family and community, leaving them feeling terrorized, isolated, vulnerable and unprotected by the law. Now the work needs to start to MAKE CHANGE in our communities and to do something FOR the VICTIMS OF HATE. It is the responsibility and obligation of our government to support the VICTIMS OF HATE CRIME by providing funding to
a) institutions victimized by HATE CRIMES to improve security measures so that the people committing the crimes can be identified and made accountable for their hateful acts.
b) fix the damage that has been caused by HATE CRIMES so that the victims themselves don't have to pay for it. They have suffered enough.
The Government of Ontario needs to send the message that they truly care about the VICTIMS OF HATE CRIME and that they care to BRING PERPETRATORS TO JUSTICE by providing the financial support needed to remove this threat from our communities.
