Regarding: Affordable Psychological & Psychotherapy Services
Long before the unspeakable tragedy at Sandy Hook many of us had become increasingly concerned about eroding mental health options for all but the wealthiest of New York's citizens. We have watched with growing alarm diminished funds for diagnosis and public education programs, greater limitations on psychotherapy by insurance companies, the astonishing expense of hospitalization, as well as severe cutbacks in day treatment facilities and community mental health organizations.
This time, we cannot let the passage of time allow us to ignore the increasing inaccessibility of psychological care for people of all ages who deal with everyday, but serious issues. Unless we make diagnosis and treatment more affordable, we will surely see more kids, young adults and their families suffer, most often quietly, yet too often with disastrous consequences.
Because of these concerns we urge the city, state and federal governments to financially, and with full commitment, support greater access to psychological services, rather than continue policies that severely limit them. Inadequate funding of mental health education and affordable treatment is no longer viable.
We believe this is a misguided direction that must be addressed immediately and constructively.
