Melissa Calzada started this petition to Walton County Sheriff Michael A. Adkinson Jr. and

We, the undersigned property owners, residents of Blue Mountain Beach, and other concerned parties petition for the following measures be taken immediately to reduce speeding and increase safety on Highway 30A.  We are a neighborhood of mostly full-time residents, not empty vacation homes. We have children and pets, and numerous users of the pedestrian path. In the last month, we have lost the life of one of our friends, Chuck Binford, and numerous pets have been killed or injured due to speeding.  We will not idly stand by and wait for another life to be taken.

THESE ARE OUR NEEDS:

1)  Strict enforcement of the 25mph speed limit and rules of the road

  • The WCSO needs to make more of a presence in Blue Mountain Beach. Empty patrol cars on the side of Highway 30A do not deter the locals from speeding.  Patrol cars should be a regular fixture on Highway 30A, especially during peak times of 6-7 am, 12-1 pm and 5-6 pm.  Tickets need to be issued.  The revenue generated from the tickets will pay for our other requests.
  • U-Turns on Highway 30-A should never be allowed
  • Motorized golf carts on pedestrian path should never be allowed

2) Increased awareness of Pedestrian Activity in area

  • Installation of overhead caution lights at the curve near McTighes and on the curve near Highland Park
  • Creation of pedestrian crosswalks at High Point at Blue Mountain shopping Center, Village of Blue Mountain Beach, Dune Side, and Highland Park.  Many people cross the 30A Highway in these areas to access the pedestrian path in order to go to the beach

3) Implementation of Traffic Calming Measures

  • As budget allows, install speed humps/bumps on Highway 30A to slow traffic
  • Use speed detection trailers on a frequent, consistent basis
  • Post more signage for speed limit/ congested area ahead

As a community, we are signing this petition with broken hearts.  We believe that everyone should be able to enjoy the amenities that 30A offers, but we need to feel and be safe.  We urge you to respond with a statement making these proposals a top priority and letting the Blue Mountain Beach Community know when work will start on the solution.
