As a response to the police killings we have seen around the country; George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and many more, we are calling for a petition to disarm Miami University Police Department while on patrol. The practice of arming the police officers we see on campus everyday has caused a great amount of stress and anxiety within students. There are many benefits that come from having an unarmed campus, one of the most important being that it will help start major conversations about the many we have lost due to police brutality and systematic changes to the system. While MUPD claims that their mission is “... to maintain a safe community through collaboration, service, protection and enforcement with the goal of achieving a collective vision for a better future.”, we have seen numerous incidents where a gun has done harm and provided no solution to the problem at hand. This fall, we will be coming back to campus while the country is still under harsh political climate and we have continuously seen more and more brutality from  the police caught on camera than ever. Especially for people of color, the hovering presence of multiple armed police officers throughout campus infringes on their ability to feel secure at Miami University. The historical background of police enforcement and systemic racist reformation after slavery has shown that, the presence of armed police have infringed on the rights of many POC due to biases that surround them. The interaction of MUPD with students is almost daily, from situations started from roommate disputes, assuring orderly conduct at Pulley’s every night and roaming residential halls. The pressure of armed police have not decreased the numbers of sexual assault, robbery or underage drinking.
