Why this petition matters

COVID-19 has created a public health crisis, which has impacted all aspects of life. In Miami, 2020 represents a monumental election year - from a mayoral race, county commissioner race, school board, and more. More than ever, we are reminded that those who hold political power must represent the interests of the people and support our communities through accountability, policy-making, and ensuring that political life is as democratic and accessible as possible.

This year, we have an opportunity to change the political landscape of the largest county in the state, but Miami Dade voters should not have to decide between voting safely or risking their health. Florida legislature requires voters to submit a "vote-by-mail" (VBM) application in order to receive their ballot. We are asking our Supervisor of Elections, Christina White to send this application with paid postage to every registered voter who is not enrolled to vote-by-mail.

While this application can currently be completed online, this is not an accessible option for all families, particularly Black and Brown working-class communities across the county. With libraries closed, not all community members have computer, printer, and internet access. On May 5th, our city commission will vote to send "educational mailers" about this registration process. This is an insufficient response -- if the county is willing to send educational mailers to voters, they should send applications to facilitate the process for voters.

Join us in demanding our access to be part of these crucial elections!
