Why this petition matters

Started by Sumra Wahid

Darren Rainey was a mentally ill prisoner in custody at a Miami-Dade correctional facility. On June 23, 2012, Rainey was locked in a blistering hot shower by corrections officers who had specially rigged it to punish inmates who misbehaved in the prison’s mental health unit, according to the Miami Herald.

Rainey's family has settled a civil suit, however the State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle refused to file criminal charges against the police. Miami-Dade has a history of not prosecuting police in examples of police brutality. It's time to make a change. This petition is to bring to light once again the violence within this community and to make the State Attorney aware of her oversight and active blindness to the issue since 1993. In 2016 she ran unopposed for her position. In November she will be up for re-election, and it's time to make a change.

This petition will seek criminal charges against the officers who killed Darren Rainey. Furthermore, this petition seeks to bring light to prisoners with mental illness, their treatment in prison, and the decision to place them in correctional facilities with no mental rehabilitation. The prison system requires incredible amounts of reform and particular attention to rehabilitation of mentally ill offenders.
