American Dream Mall is a Nightmare Reality for Northwest Miami-Dade County
0 have signed. Let’s get to 1,000!
On January 25, 2017, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners voted 11-1 to grant preliminary approval for the proposed American Dream Mall. Among the many serious drawbacks, the proposed mall will most certainly exacerbate an already troublesome traffic problem in Northwest Miami-Dade County by adding an additional 70,000 car trips through the area daily.
One of the loudest arguments made in favor of it is that the mall would be an economic engine that produces millions of dollars annually in taxes, and create thousands of jobs. However, the low-wage, transient, no-benefit jobs it will create are NOT worth the negative impact that the project will have on so many aspects of life here in Miami-Dade County.
For example: the environment (the water use for this project alone is staggering - drilling new wells and taking more and more groundwater is a recipe for sink holes); property values (Who will buy a house in an area inaccessible by car for seven to nine hours a day?); small businesses (How can our local entrepreneurs compete with even more big boxes and national chain restaurants?); fire and police response times; crime rates; and most importantly, the quality of life in the area.
The good will certainly NOT outweigh the bad. Is all this worth selling our souls and selling out our way of life to some already filthy-rich mega-developers? We think not!
As it stands, only the mall owners and their partners will truly gain anything positive out of this project. We urge you to sign this petition which will be delivered to the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners during the final hearing, which will be held at a date yet to be determined, but likely in late spring or early summer 2017.
