Female golfers in Massachusetts understandably lost the opportunity to compete individually at the Girls State Tournament in 2020, but this will be the second year we are not allowed to play. This is devastating to many athletes, especially the seniors who will not get another opportunity to compete in a high school tournament.

At the peak of Covid, golf was considered a safe sport, and now that most people are vaccinated, it is much safer. These rules were made in March, when the Covid situation was different. Now that Massachusetts has lifted all restrictions, there is no reason that girls should be excluded from playing as individuals this year. Even so, it is unfair that boys sports requiring close contact, like football and wrestling, are allowed to play, while girls golf is being restricted. At a time when women's golf is being promoted so heavily, this feels like a big blow, and an undeserved punishment. It's ironic that Women In Golf Day was recently celebrated, yet young female golfers are being penalized because there are not enough girls to form a team in their high school.  There aren't too many individual female players in Massachusetts, so it should not be so difficult to accommodate us. There are still a few weeks until the first sectional tournament, and girls across the state would really appreciate it if we were allowed to play!
