Remove sexist school dress codes that target women and women of color.
Why this petition matters
The school dress codes have been set up to take away the joy of dressing to go to school, and according to school dress code laws on FindLaw, this has dated back to the 16th century and has been first established by the U.S. The Supreme court in 1969 because students wanted to protest against the Vietnam War. Not only does it take the fun and joy of dressing how you would want to dress, but also targets women and women of color. I think this school dress code is a blockage for young women’s path to learning. Whenever women are violating the “sexist” rule, they are put out of class, missing what the teacher is teaching to change clothes, or they will just send them home because they are “distracting” the boys' learning. Why are they controlling what women wear for boys to not get distracted? Wouldn’t it be better if we teach boys that women aren’t sexual objects?
Let's come together and deconstruct the sexist school dress code for women, girls by allowing any hairstyles for black women and for everyone. Allowing women to wear what is comfortable for them, Not having these rules that cater to men and boys, or we can have the same codes applied to women to men as well. Women should have the freedom of wearing clothing without the feeling of a sexual object as what schools made out to be. For example, wearing any length of skirts, their bra strap showing, having their shoulders showing. These examples are real codes that schools have, and it is ridiculous. Even more ridiculous is, men and young boys aren’t coded for these examples, it is weird, and it shows how schools see women and young girls. Thank you for reading!
