Rep. Samantha Steckloff started this petition to MI House of Representatives

Representative Samantha Steckloff (D-Farmington/Farmington Hills) has introduced 2 bills into the MI House of Representatives to increase access to mammograms (House Bill 4815) and pap smears (House Bill 4816) earlier and without debilitating health care costs. Our next step is to voice our support and need for a hearing before the Insurance Committee, chaired by Rep. Daire Rendon (R-Lake City). That's where we need your help.

The current state law in MI allows for someone to get one mammogram as a baseline between 35-40. Rep. Steckloff's bill would allow for annual mammograms after age 35--period. As a breast cancer survivor, diagnosed at age 31, Rep. Steckloff believes it's imperative to be able to track changes in breast tissue regularly to find cancer earlier.

Early detection is crucial, as breast cancer is being diagnosed at younger and younger ages. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, breast cancer detected early has a 99% survival rate in the first five years. HB 4815 is a critical step to increasing early detection.

HB 4816 would remove the age cap on pap smears in the Insurance Code of 1956. Right now, pap smears are only required to be covered up to age 65. However, 20% of diagnoses for cervical cancer occur over the age of 65. The code as it stands doesn’t do as much as it could to help us reduce cervical cancer rates. According to the American Cancer Society, 4,290 women will die from cervical cancer in 2021, and 14,480 new cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed. Pap smears help detect changes in the cervix before cancer develops, and increasing access will help us tackle this issue.

Help us get the hearing we need--sign your name. Feel free to share any personal or professional connection you have to breast, cervical, or ovarian cancer. We can do more to prevent cancer in Michigan. Thank you for your support.
