At the current pace, transforming every subway line could take half a century and cost $20 billion. The signal system is so outdated that it cannot identify precisely where trains are, requiring more room between them. And when it fails, trains stop, delays pile up and riders fume. In the New York area, there are 22 subway lines and only one of them has been optimized with the current signal system. We can fix this issue by proposing Communications Based Train Control (CBTC). This technology upgrade will allow trains to be operated at closer distances, slightly increasing capacity; will allow the MTA to keep track of trains in real time and provide more information to the public regarding train arrivals and delays; and will eliminate the need for complex interlocking towers.
