Why this petition matters

Started by Douglas Carmody

The latest proposed development of Whitehall, at the foot of the Woods Memorial Bridge, consists of six 4 story apartment buildings and numerous 3 story condominiums with over 420 cars on less than 10 acres. This development will create unprecedented traffic congestion and delays. It will stifle downtown businesses because of long delays and backed up traffic getting over the Woods Bridge. Emergency vehicles will be stuck in traffic, unable to respond in a timely manner. It will cause traffic to backup to the National Cemetery on the Beaufort side and to the airport on the Lady’s Island side. It’s apparent our elected officials put unrestrained growth ahead of infrastructure. It’s time to stop it before the reason we live here is destroyed and Beaufort becomes a parking lot surrounded by apartment buildings. It is our contention that the development plan of Whitehall presented to the the MPC board by WhitehallPoint Holding LLC. does not meet City of Beaufort’s master plan due to untenable traffic congestion. We the undersigned citizens of Beaufort and Beaufort county, oppose any development of Whitehall that does not significantly mitigate the overwhelmed road infrastructure on Sea Island Parkway.
