Black women have been fighting for protection from sexual violence for the past nine decades. Unfortunately, black women remain vulnerable to sexual violence due to intersectionality; the systematic oppression black women experience based upon their race and gender. 35% of black women experienced some form of sexual violence during their lifetime. 17% of black women experienced sexual violence other than rape by an intimate partner during their lifetime. These percentages only account for the number of women who report their abuse.

Black women experience more sexual violence than any other race, and that's a PROBLEM!!!

Did You Know?

  • 40 to 60 percent of black women report being subjected to coercive sexual contact by age 18.
  • Black women were two and a half times more likely to be murdered by men than their white counterparts. And, more than 9 in 10 black female victims knew their killers.
  • For every black woman who reports rape, at least 15 black women do not report.
  • One in four black girls will be sexually abused before the age of 18.
  • Black men sexually assault 91% of black women, and 75% of those attacks are by men they know--family members, friends, trusted advisors, or neighbors.
  • Men found guilty of raping Black women receive shorter sentences than men found guilty of raping White women.
  • Black women are 2.5 times more likely to experience physical or sexual violence from a partner or spouse.

Not only do black women need to be protected they need to feel protected. Black women are less likely to seek out help from law officials and law enforcement. Law enforcement and the legal system are not seen as viable avenues of recourse, as these systems continue to oppress and discriminate against people of color. This issue has caused black women to distrust the legal system to protect them.

What Do Black Women Need?

Black women need access to more resources to get out of their toxic environment. On institutional, economic, and personal levels, Black women have less access to the resources needed to combat sexual assault. They also need mental health and physical services. Thirdly, law officials and law enforcement need to make their sexual violence cases a priority. I believe that would put some trust back into the system so more women can get help. Lastly, the Violence Against Women Act needs to be reauthorized.

How Can You Help?

You can help by becoming an informed ally and signing this petition. Contact your elected officials and share this data. Ask them what they're doing to protect black women from sexual violence. Also, support organizations that work on behalf of black women. Sexual violence is also a big problem for black women in juvenile detention centers, jails, and prisons.
