Chief of Mission

U.S. Embassy, Asmara, Eritrea

Re: Message of appreciation – June 11, 2022, Presentation on Erisat

Dear Mr. Steven Walker,

As members of Global Yiakl Eritrean Movement (GYEM) and Eritrean justice and freedom activists in diaspora, we wish to thank you for taking the time from your busy schedule to participate in the historic symposium on Press Freedom, organized by ERISAT.

Your speech was highly anticipated by Eritreans inside and outside the country and it exceeded all expectations. By boldly and unequivocally calling out the Eritrean regime for its disinformation and false narrative, you have set the record straight and presented the true US policy towards Eritrea. We keenly follow you on the U.S. Embassy’s Facebook page and are grateful for your frequent updates on issues that matter to Eritreans and your constant rebuttal to the disinformation of the Eritrean Ministry of Information.

Moreover, we express our gratitude for your unwavering commitment to human rights, peace, and goodwill toward the Eritrean people. There is no doubt that you are the epitome of American values for showing your clear stand against repression, injustice and human rights violation perpetuated by PFDJ regime.

Dear Mr. Walker,

It was immensely touching and heartwarming, when you called imprisoned Eritrean journalists by name and mentioned the numerous political prisoners, including G-15 who have been held incommunicado detention for over 20 years. Eritrean prisons are crammed with tens of thousands of Eritreans – the elderly, children and women. On June 13, 2022, UN Special Rapporteur has presented his findings to the UN-HRC of gross human rights violations in Eritrea which duly confirms your claims about the PFDJ regime’s atrocities.

You also condemned the destabilizing role Eritrea is playing in the conflict in Northern Ethiopia. Moreover, you also mentioned Eritrea’s cynical support for the blatant Russian aggression against Ukraine. It has openly invited Russia and China to be its geo-political strategic partners. By flouting the rules-based international order, the Eritrean regime proved it is diametrically opposed to the interests of the US and the West.

Finally, we want to highlight that Eritreans are decent and hopeful people with lots of aspirations who deserve liberty, peace and prosperity. Thus, we ask the US government to support the Eritrean people in fulfilling its aspirations.

On behalf of the voiceless Eritreans and members of Global Yiakl Eritrean Movement we thank you for your courageous and historic efforts.

The Eritrean people thank you deeply.

Yours sincerely,

Global Yiakl Eritrean Movement (GYEM)

and

Eritrean justice and freedom activists in diaspora
