Every year, around 18 lakh people die due to contaminated food and water throughout the world. In that, over 200 diseases are caused by unsafe food containing harmful bacteria, parasites, viruses, and chemical substances. The Indian scenario is even worse with foodborne illnesses causing outbreaks in almost every part of the country. (MAMC Journal of Medicinal Sciences)
Recently, on 11 Feb this year, over 100 people were hospitalized in Ahmedabad due to food poisoning incident at a marriage ceremony. Marriages are mass events and hence require rigorous supervision and scrutiny since a single lapse may threaten thousands. (Food poisoning: 100 hospitalised - TOI)
We all know the infamous quality of mess foods at universities. Safe to say, I’ve experienced the same at the mess of Amity University, Jaipur. On numerous occasions, I’ve had to have stale or sometimes even rotten salads. Almost frequently I’ve had my dinner on wet plates in the combo section which was totally unhygienic. On other occasions, I’ve had to wait for a long time just to get chapatis which I have with cold vegetables in the combo section again.

Almost three-fourths including the students and the faculty of Amity consumes their daily meals from this mess and as such, it is the responsibility of the mess committee and the authorities to uphold the standards of the mess.
Despite numerous suggestions, the situation has not seemed to change. It is our responsibility to protect ourselves and act promptly so as not to let the same fate as those 100 in Ahmedabad befall us.
