MesaPublicSchools Families started this petition to Mesa Public School District and High School Administration

Completion of high school is a large milestone in a student’s education. For soon-to-be High School graduates, the pandemic has impacted several meaningful milestones these kids have worked for this their whole life such as prom, grad night, and final experiences at school with friends, teachers, and staff. We would like to take a stand that it not eliminate a personal, memorable experience for graduation as well!  In the class of 2020, we have students that are the first in their family to receive a high school diploma, the first to go to college, even the first to live in this country. Regardless of status, each and every one of these graduating seniors have worked incredibly hard to achieve their personal success, and that deserves to be celebrated. In these uncertain times, we understand that a typical graduation ceremony is not a guarantee. However, there are steps that can be taken in order to achieve some degree of a memorable experience in this event, some examples being a socially-distant graduation such as a parade or drive-in-theater approach, a postponed graduation date when Arizona could very well be back to a new normal, or even multiple graduation dates for smaller portions of students while limiting attendees. Whatever the case, we encourage you to seek options outside of the virtual realm in order to guarantee a personal and memorable experience, something that every member of the class of 2020 deserves.  Students have planned out these activities since senior year started and these end-of-the-year celebrations would have brought families and friends together to celebrate before they move onto the next chapter of their lives. The Graduation within itself is a rite of passage that all students should be able to experience.

These students and their families have been waiting 17+ years to watch this final moment as their loved one transition from childhood to adulthood. Just receiving their high school diplomas and hearing their name on a virtual platform does not compare to the significance of being able to walk the stage with their cap and gown and have an experience with their friends, teachers, school staff, and families celebrating alongside with them.

In consideration of the pandemic, this petition is asking for, at the very least, a graduation ceremony worthy of the time and effort these graduates have put into their schooling such as the examples above. We advocate on behalf of the Class of 2020 within the Mesa Public School District and hope that our voices are heard.
