Phyl Griffiths started this petition to Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and

The Merthyr Rising of 1831 was highly significant not only in Welsh history, but internationally. It was a workers’ rebellion against the cruel injustices of ironmasters such as Guest, Bacon & Crawshay. Many recall the working class martyr Dic Penderyn, hung for a crime he didn’t commit. However, there is no memorial to the 24 people killed by the army in that uprising, men like John Hughes & Rowland Thomas, in a massacre worse than Peterloo.
A stunning new artwork by Merthyr artist Gus Payne is the focus for Yes Cymru Merthyr Tudful’s call for a permanent memorial to the unnamed 24.

Roedd Gwrthryfel Merthyr 1831 yn arwyddocaol iawn nid yn unig yn hanes Cymru, ond yn rhyngwladol. Gwrthryfel gweithwyr oedd hwn yn erbyn anghyfiawnderau creulon meistri haearn fel Guest, Bacon a Crawshay. Mae llawer yn cofio hanes Dic Penderyn; dyn dieuog cafodd ei grogi er mwyn rhoi terfyn ar unrhyw brotestiadau pellach. Fodd bynnag, does dim cofeb i'r 24 o bobl a laddwyd gan y fyddin yn y gwrthdystiadau hwnnw, dynion fel John Hughes a Rowland Thomas, mewn cyflafan waeth na Peterloo.
Gwaith celf newydd trawiadol gan yr artist o Ferthyr Gus Payne yw canolbwynt y galw gan Yes Cymru Merthyr Tudful am gofeb barhaol i'r 24 di-enw.
