Merriam-Webster currently defines the noun "trump" as:
A: a card of a suit any of whose cards will win over a card that is not of this suit —called also trump card
B: the suit whose cards are trumps for a particular hand —often used in plural
: a decisive overriding factor or final resource —called also trump card
: a dependable and exemplary person
The third definition has been rendered obsolete.
Just as "awful" used to mean "inspiring wonder" and now means "very unpleasant" and "bully" used to refer to "a good fellow" but now refers to "someone who mocks or harms those who are weaker" it is also time to update the definition of "trump".
This petition seeks to officially change the third definition of "trump" from "a dependable and exemplary person" to "an inept person, especially one who overestimates his own ability or achievement."
