Tegan Clark started this petition to Merewether high school deputies and principal

Merewether high school is the hunter regions only elected academically selective institution, taking care of 1080 students annually. This school is renowned for being a school for academically gifted students, who uphold the qualities of future leaders.

This being said, the school has run aground on some issues caused by policies they have in place, one of which is the control over student uniforms. Merewether high school provides students with forces wearing of formal uniform (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday), and sport uniform (Wednesday and PDHPE) with no exceptions.

We as a student body, acknowledge this, and accept this as the schools wishes, but believe that punishments over the wearing of sport uniform should be exclusive to formal occasions (school assemblies/presentations/open days/guest visits ect). Although, the expectation for us as a cohort should be to adhere to this. This is to the extent of the uniform policy that should be kept.

Footwear is an unfair issue that the mhs deputies have highlighted as being an issue. We as a student body request that converses, vans, Nike and other branded shoes that under the discretion of the tech faculty apply as suitable for activities in kitchens/workshops ect should be permitted. These suede shoes resist water well when sprayed and are as safe as leather shoes. We believe regardless of the rubber or laces being white on the shoes that if the main body of the shoe is black that it should be permitted.

With the cold weather in winter months, and the rise in mental health awareness, what better argument to permit the wearing of casual hoodies and jumpers at Merewether high. The price of the school jacket at merewether ranges from $84-$104 depending on the students size. Economically it makes sense for families to send their kids to school in pre owned winter accessories. Merewether high school should also take into account the mental health of students, particularly their choice of coping methods. Self harm is prominent amongst 12-18 year olds, and i as a student at merewether high school have withnessed a teacher force a student to take off their jacket, only to reveal self harm scars and have the entirety of the class see their secret. Is merewether high school more focused on creating a prestigious Image competitive with private schools, or creating a renowned haven for academic students where they can comfortably learn and receive the help they need?

There is no certified connection between uniform and academic performance, and as a cohort of gifted students on our own merit, the relaxed uniform is no brainer that will not negatively impact our performance. Schools like the Hunter School Of Performing Arts, have achieved higher and higher attendance rates, and the schools uniform is considered one of the most flexible in the region.

We implore Merewether High School to take into account the students wishes, and not prioritise the schools image as being one which craves order, seeing as nothing is more important than the attendance and mental health of their students. There are more vital issues for the school board to deal with (suicide prevention, study guides, mental health checks and awareness) than the colour of your socks.

The school should negotiate these policies with their students to address the anger amongst students about these unfair rules.
