Shri C. R. Chaudhary Saheb,
Hon'ble Minister of State for Consumer Affairs; Food & Public Distribution; and Commence and Industry.
Government Of India,
Bungalow No. 2, Tughlak Lane Road,
New Delhi - 110011.

Respected Sir,

Sub: Mentioning of "RATE per KILOGRAMS" or "RATE per LITRES on packets/packagings.

Dear Sir,

In today’s world of fast moving consumer goods with many products available in the market with different packaging, and features, decision-making for the consumer is getting more complicated than offer.

To stay competitive, manufacturing companies offer products which are priced at an amount which is easily payable using common denominations of coins or currencies (An example is travel size packs available at Rs. 10, 20, 50, etc.). These products, with ease of payment, are targeted at the mass market and are some of the most frequently sold products.

Manufacturers of these products declare that their products are “’Not a standard pack size under the Standards of Weights and Measures (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 1977’ or ‘Nonstandard size under the Standards of Weights and Measures (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 1977’".

The sellers abuse this rule and make much bigger packaging with lots of air or gas, to make buyers falsely believe that they have greater content in them, and make the buyers believe that their product is more reasonably priced than the competitors. But because of the declaration, enforcing authorities can't do anything, as the sellers have abided to the law.

MEASURES: We request you to take measures to restrain this unfair practice and enforce sellers to write in clearly visible text what the "RATES PER KG" or "RATES PER LITERS" of their products are, depending on the type of product. This will enable the general public to know the real price he is paying for the product purchased by him and he can decide fairly between competitive products by comparing actual price per quantity instead of looking at the item packaging (shape and size).

Please raise this issue on the floor and write to the concerned ministry to take necessary steps to empower the citizen of the nation. Thanks to your support, a consumer will finally be aware of the real amount they are paying for the product, and we will help the general public realize the true power of motto "JAGO GRAHAK JAGO!"

I am happy to answer any further questions or clarifications regarding how such a rule can be implemented.
