Mental Health Reform at Texas A&M University (Aggies Heal Home Initiative)

Mental Health Reform at Texas A&M University (Aggies Heal Home Initiative)
Why this petition matters
The Texas A&M Psychology Club is starting the Aggies Heal Home Initiative. It encompasses three proposals that center on mental health reform on campus.
The proposals are as follows:
1. TWO University-mandated Mental Health Days per month
The first Monday and last Friday of the month will be University-sanctioned Mental Health Days to provide students with days meant to reduce stress and burnout. This semester, we have 5 out of 75 weekdays off. It can be improved to 11 out of 75.
2. Expanding CAPS presence at Fish Camp & New Student Conference
The time for CAPS to speak at Fish Camp/NSC was only 20 minutes. Incoming college students may be uninformed about mental health and will need extra time to understand critical concepts. We are proposing CAPS has a minimum of 1 hour at Fish Camp/NSC.
3. Quick Counseling within Student Services Building
This low-commitment intervention identifies concerns like stress, anxiety, and depression. Once a client is comfortable with the concept of therapy, it can be their gateway into full therapy sessions and support groups. It has been shown in a pilot study that one 30-minute session of therapy decreased symptoms of anxiety and depression.
The initiative's overall goal is to promote a proper school-life balance for Aggies and to remove the stigma of getting mental help.
