Dedicated, willing, able and passionate men are being kept from entering military because GED is not equivalent to High School Diploma! Please help me to change this!
My son quit school out of rebellion the middle of his senior year, but quickly realized what a mistake he had made. He took the GED from 8am to 5pm on a saturday and passed with flying colors. Upon signing to join the military he was turned down because "General Education Diploma" apparently does not mean "High School Diploma". Which, is the whole reason behind obtaining a GED. If the General Education Diploma is not given the same recognition as a High School Diploma then why take it? The GED was started for those that wished to complete their High School Diploma, whatever the reason. Those that have taken the GED and passed I'm sure are proud, (it is a tough test) and excited to begin their job hunt, (diploma in hand). Then, to be shot down because it is not considered "High School Diploma", is false advertisement and false hope. To be treated differently than those that have a different piece of paper is degrading. Stop giving false hope to those that pass a GED if they are not to be given the same respect as the "equivalency" of a high school diploma! Either stop implying it is a way to receive your high school diploma OR Rename It GENERAL EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA, giving the respect and consideration to all.
