Stricter Laws on Loud Exhaust on Vehicles
Stricter Laws on Loud Exhaust on Vehicles
I live within walking distance to a University, and for the past few years, I have been woken up, startled, and hindered by the noise of mufflers/loud exhaust on cars and trucks. People purposefully speed in order to cause the loud noise, and I truly believe it is a public disturbance of peace and a safety threat. This seems to happen most prevalently in the East Memphis/ surrounding university area. I believe that the following sections are currently being violated:
CHAPTER 9-68. - NOISE CONTROL:
Sec. 9-68-1. - Loud, disturbing and unnecessary noises generally.
(Code 1967, § 24-1; Code 1985, § 22-1)
Sec. 9-68-2. - Excessive noise near school, church, court or hospital.
(Code 1967, § 24-2; Code 1985, § 22-2)
Sec. 9-68-11. - Loudspeakers or amplifiers on vehicles.
(Code 1967, § 24-12; Code 1985, § 22-11)
Sec. 9-68-12. - Mufflers for steam and stationary internal combustion engines.
(Code 1967, § 24-13; Code 1985, § 22-12)
We have received a response from Mayor Strickland about this issue he encouraged me to reach out to the Memphis City Council. I know that it is not only a concern of mine, but of many others as well. LET'S MAKE OUR CITY SAFER. Thank you for your time and consideration.
