Native RITES started this petition to Memphis City Council

Every year the second Monday of October, Columbus Day is observed by Memphis. We advocate for honest education that does not glorify violence. Today Memphis sits on traditionally Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, and Quapaw land.

Columbus Day should be removed for SEVERAL reasons:

1. He never stepped foot on U.S. soil.

2. Instead, he landed in the Bahamas. Subsequently, he raped, enslaved, infected, and murdered Native Caribbeans, leaving the Native population nearly extinct.

3. As a result, he introduced European exploration and a culture of slavery and genocide that has killed countless Indigenous, Black, and Non-White People.

4. Columbus Day is a commercialized holiday that as we continue to celebrate, we teach a false narrative to Americans and visitors of Christopher Columbus's  ‘discovery’ of America and further glamorize rape culture and violence as a tool to solve conflict.

Columbus Day should be REMOVED as a Holiday and REPLACED to observe Indigenous People’s Day. On Indigenous People's Day, we can teach RESPECT for life, and especially respect for the Native groups of people who were the original caretakers for this land and preserve their history, lands, and resources.
