Cigarettes may be small but together have a huge environmental impact. Each cigarette can take up to 10 years to decompose, during that process, they leach harmful chemicals and toxins into the environment and harm all the surrounding environment.

MUNHOPE has been working hard to combat the devastating cigarette litter issue in our local community and on our university campus. Since May 2020, MUNHOPE has held four one-hour clean ups on Memorial University's St. John's Campus. During that time, we have collected over 18,000 cigarette butts.

In light of Memorial University asking for feedback on their new revised smoking policy we are petitioning for MUN to add cigarette butt recepticals throughout the St. John's campus that would help combat the cigarette butt litter issue. The current revised policy has an "Outdoor Designated Smoking Area: An outdoor university space marked by “Designated Smoking Area” signage."  but does not include plans of recepticals or proper disposal. We are advocating for the addition of these recepticals to ensure proper disposal and to minimize the environmental impact.

Furthmore, we would like to see these recepticals work in partnership with the Terracyle cigarette butt recycling program. This program allows for the cigarette butts to be 100% recycled after collection.
