Proper Food Portions at South Lewis Central School

Proper Food Portions at South Lewis Central School
We recently underwent a renovation to our kitchen, and the South Lewis students and staff members enjoy most of it. However, one problem is the portions. Many students participate in sports, other after-school activities, and some head straight to work, all of which require the proper fuel to our growing bodies. It’s been extremely apparent that students are leaving lunch unsatisfied with how much food they were given. Most students have to buy another, whole lunch just to feel a little less hungry. This serves as a problem to the kids who are still starving, but don’t have money to pay for more food to nourish their body. Before the new kitchen and food renovation, students were able to choose from multiple sides, fresh fruit and vegetable choices, and the desserts offered depending upon the day. There has always been a limit as to how much we can take, but never a limit like the one we’re given currently. An example of a standard lunch would be, 5 mozzarella sticks, a scoop of sauce, an apple, and a tiny plastic cup with a few carrots and celery sticks. This may sound ideal on paper, but in reality, the mozzarella sticks are small and skinny, the apple you chose could be rotten, and the carrots are brown. What do you eat now for a filling lunch, as a student who has no more money to buy another lunch? Most of the time, the main meal that was chosen is served for a few days after that, with or without the sides, depending on if they ran out. As students, we are asking for larger portions of our main meal, a more diverse selection of sides, and the limit of one fruit and one vegetable to be raised. Please sign this petition to support the students of South Lewis Central School in having nourishing and filling lunches everyday.
