As members of the Afghan diaspora in the UK, we have been moved and inspired by the outpouring of support for Afghan refugees in the past six months. However, we are also painfully aware that the vast majority of those fearing for their lives in Afghanistan have no access to safe routes to protection.

Under Clause 11 of the government's planned Nationality and Borders Bill, people who are forced to take dangerous routes to seek safety could be turned away or even criminalised. We fear that many from Afghanistan could be affected by this draconian law, which will punish refugees rather than protecting them.

We call on members of the public to join us in urging MPs to follow the example of the Lords, throw out Clause 11 and uphold Britain's tradition of refugee protection.
