I believe that the Jones county school system dress code is outdated for today’s society. The dress code leans more towards females, going as far as to tell them their shoulders are a problem and they are to be covered. Yes, the school dress code does make a few good points, but most of these rules are outdated. We should do more to teach our young men and women how to correctly behave themselves and be respectful of others than to tell students to cover up or “you’re too distracting.” I, along with many other students, have been addressed, disrupting our school day to be scolded for what we chose to wear on our own bodies. This dress code is extremely enforced at the high school. Most of us are just busy teens trying to make it through our day. We have more important things like grades, home life, and our jobs, to be worried about whether our shoulders are exposed or whether our pants are too tight. Many students are going through things in their personal lives such as a move, body growth, house fires, a divorce splitting their home into two like I’m currently going through, or any other natural disasters. It can be hard to get the right clothes for school when faced with obstacles like these. I also believe in the right to freely express myself through my clothing choices without being criticized by other people’s standards. I hope you will too!
