Dear Members of the ION Systems Neuroscience Search Committee,

We as members of ION would like to offer our strong recommendation for Dr. Gul Dolen as the ION Systems Neuroscience faculty hire.

Dr. Dolen’s research regarding the neural mechanisms underlying complex social behaviors in mice (and octopuses), and how these processes are disrupted in disease, would serve as a strong compliment to the research already being conducted in ION and would align well with the translational goals of the Knight Campus. Her studies would extend our department’s work into the field of behavior, while remaining aligned with ongoing research sufficiently to allow for ample collaboration with others, both within and outside the department. Her previous experience running a laboratory and managing students would help her quickly become an actively contributing part of the ION community.

Dr. Dolen’s ability to generate excitement and enthusiasm about her work was obvious based on the response she generated both in her talks and throughout her entire visit. Her ability to engage her audience would serve to attract undergraduate and graduate students to our department and to neuroscience in general.

We at ION value fostering a diverse research community within our Institute and our department. As Dr. Dolen served as the Director of Minority Affairs in the Department of Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, she has experience supporting minority students with their specific needs as well as working to expand diversity within a department, and would be a valuable resource to guide our efforts to do the same.

We feel that Dr. Gulen represents best the qualities, both on a scientific and personal level, that we value in a candidate to fill the open position in our department. We hope you consider our strong endorsement of Dr. Dolen and her application.
