Congress: Stop Wasting Tax Dollars to Torture and Kill Monkeys for Bad Science!

Every year, Congress spends hundreds of millions of our tax dollars on medical experiments which torment and kill monkeys, but produce no useful results. As a surgeon and former recipient of government funding for research, I am alarmed that Congress allows National Institutes of Health (NIH) to waste our precious research dollars on flawed and cruel monkey experiments. I recently learned that my alma mater, the University of Wisconsin, is planning to inject the brains of live young monkeys with various chemicals in an attempt to manipulate their anxious personalities. Please sign this petition to urge Congress to stop cruel and wasteful NIH-funded monkey experiments!
Last year, over 500,000 of us took action on Change.org and successfully pressured the University of Wisconsin to cancel horrible experiments on baby monkeys. The study involved separating infant monkeys from their mothers shortly after birth and then psychologically terrorizing them throughout their brief lives to induce extreme anxiety. The infants were to be killed by age one and their brains dissected.
To date, University of Wisconsin’s lead investigator, Dr. Ned Kalin, has received over $30 million of your money to torment monkeys but discovered no new treatment for humans. Likewise, NIH investigator, Stephen Suomi was recently called out for his shocking depression experiments on maternally-deprived infant monkeys. These wasteful experiments produced no meaningful breakthroughs, but ignited significant public backlash and are now being phased out. Other equally horrendous testing on monkeys is happening nationwide in numerous NIH-funded laboratories. It is well past time that these studies be scrutinized and come to an end.
Congress ultimately controls the purse strings to NIH, but our lawmakers have not done enough to stop the NIH from funding these egregious experiments. In fact, Congress just gave the NIH a $2 billion raise in the recently passed omnibus bill, while many Americans scramble to make ends meet. Using our dollars on flawed archaic animal-based experimentation diverts critical dollars away from the development and application of more promising 21st century human cell-based and chip technologies which have a greater potential of advancing medical treatments and helping patients.
In 2011 concerned lawmakers urged the NIH to commission a study by the Institute of Medicine (now known as the National Academy of Medicine) to scrutinize the scientific necessity of chimpanzees in biomedical and behavioral experiments. The Institute of Medicine concluded that the use of chimpanzees was unnecessary. Following this investigation and intense public outcry, NIH stopped paying for experiments on chimpanzees and promised to move the chimpanzees to sanctuary. Now is the time to do the same for the monkeys!
Please join me and call on Congress to request an audit by the National Academy of Medicine of all NIH-funded research on monkeys so we can stop these inhumane and pointless monkey experiments. Congress will not act unless we speak up!
