Hello everyone, we are the L.E.G.S., Lego Engineers Going Supreme, we are a Minnesotan FLL team and this year‘s innovation project is city scapers. For our project we have decided to make crosswalks safer because. In 2018 alone 987 pedestrians were injured, and 45 were killed. Our goal is to decrease that number significantly by implementing safety features at crosswalks where the most accidents may occur. Some of these roads you may drive on everyday.

In the state of Minnesota pedestrians have the right of way, except for in special cases. The few if there isn’t a marked crosswalk, if there is an overhead or tunnel passage provided or if the pedestrian starts crossing, not giving the driver enough time to yield. We have a few ideas and solutions to combat the increasing numbers of pedestrian crashes occurring yearly. Our first solution to raise visibility is implementing 1.5 feet tall tower lights that are activated by a button found on most stop lights. By raising visibility at night it will be harder to accidentally hit a pedestrians because you will be able to see them.

Our second solution is installing rumble strips on every other block so that drivers don’t pass out while on the road. One negative to this solution is that it becomes slightly redundant when about half a foot of snow gets introduced. however it proves effective in any other season, as it keeps the driver from falling asleep
