Improve funding for homeless youth shelters that are LGBT friendly.

Homeless youth that identify as LGBTQ are more vunerable than homeless non-LGBTQ youth. Not enough programs and shelters create a safe space for LGBTQ youth and cutting funding for these services puts them more at risk for sexual and violent assaults, STD/STI infection, and suicide. There are nearly 4,000 youth living on the streets of New York City. 1500 of them identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning. There are only 250 shelter beds citywide designated for homeless youth. Nearly $7 million have already been cut for services while the LGBT youth population that are homeless continues to grow.

I just signed the following petition addressed to: Mayor Bloomberg.

Improve funding for homeless youth shelters that are LGBT friendly.

Homeless youth that identify as LGBTQ are more vunerable than homeless non-LGBTQ youth. There is already not enough programs and shelters that create a safe space for LGBTQ youth and cutting funding for these services puts them more at risk for sexual and violent assaults, STD/STI infection, and suicide. The city spends about $55,000 to maintain a youth in jail for 1 yearwhereas it only costs about $5500 to keep them off the streets permanently. Help keep our LGBT safe and off the streets by improving the funding for affirmative shelters and programs.
