Melbourne University has told us that "The Student Services and Amentities Fee (SSAF) was brought in to recognise the importance of campus life and activity to people's University experience."
For students at the Victorian College of The Arts, the reality is that the SSAF was brought in to recognise the importance of campus life and activity at Parkville, while students at Southbank continue to pay money towards things which will not benefit us, and have nothing to do with us.
The Student Services and Amenities Fee goes towards:
Clubs and Societies
Melbourne University Sport
Free music and bands
The Rowden White Library
Providing Libraries and Reading Rooms
Improved safety on campus
Wom*ns and Queer Spaces
The Theatre Department
Activities and entertainment
Campus Entertainment Program
Student Computing Centre
Peer Support Program
Union House Sleep-in
Discounts around Parkville Campus
Student Experience Fair
None of the above things are situated at The Victorian College of The Arts. Some of them have services which can be available with request, but none of the offices or primary staff are situated at the Victorian College of The Arts. Every single student at the Victorian College of the Arts is being forced to pay the $263 SSAF regardless of this fact.
from the SSAF, 1.5 million dollars will be allocated to Student Services so they can establish three student support teams. All of these support teams will be situated at the Parkville campus. These support teams will provide advice and support to students on matters related to finance, housing, fees and scholarships, and employment. Not ONE of these will be supplied at the Victorian College of the Arts.
None of our lectures are recorded, we are never supplied with free breakfasts, lunches, dinners, alcohol, or entertainment, our library facilities are quite clearly lacking, and we have extremely limited computer facilities on campus, which are always crowded. We have nothing to do with Farrago, despite the fact that each of our departments would obviously benefit from this. We have no involvement in the Clubs and Societies, and have no involvement or interest in Melbourne University Sport.
We do not benefit from the SSAF, and we do not want to pay it unless it is reviewed and becomes a more realistic reflection of the desires of Southbank students.
