The mandate to merge school districts under Act 46 has accentuated a deep divide in the communities of Rupert and Pawlet, VT. For many years, these school districts designated the use of NY Middle and High Schools, while students who chose to use VT Schools financed a significant portion of their secondary educations.
Pawlet and Rupert are alone in the State, as all other VT School Districts that access education at out-of-state institutions provide students with the equivalent of the Vermont Average Tuition to attend a School in VT, either public or independent. Designation to NY Schools creates a financial barrier to education in VT as families must pay out-of-pocket to attend VT Schools. This obstacle is more than what many families can overcome.
Our aim is to meet in the middle. We are asking the Act 46 Merger Committee to support a compromise that will continue designation to NY Middle and High Schools for 7th and 8th grades and provide the Vermont Average Tuition for students in grades 9th -12th who wish to attend VT Schools. This allows our communities to continue to support NY Schools, students can continue their educations there through 12th grade while others can attend VT Schools at a reduced cost.
