Problem
Florida has the highest number of uninsured and underinsured drivers in the US. 26.7% uninsured and 40% without PIP or Bodily Injury Liability. Additionally, it is these drivers that cause the largest number of crashes, deaths, and injuries.
Solution
Change the Florida Insurance laws to require minimum $300000 BIL (Bodily Injury Liability). Require drivers to purchase minimum six month policy paid in full for auto registration issuance. Institute immediate impoundment of vehicle until the aforementioned requirements are met if stopped with out insurance. Institute datamining to find registrations without current insurance and follow up for clarification of reason.
Personal story
A group of cyclists that I and my friends know were run down by a driver carrying only the minimum insurance which will not come close to covering their injuries. I will also not compensate for the death of one of those riders. By tightening up the insurance laws those drivers that indicate their lack of respect for the privilege of driving in Florida will be encouraged to use public or ride sharing transportation and perhaps remove Florida's stigma as the most dangerous state to drive in.
