Keep the W. T. Woodson High School name

Ms. McLaughlin,

Apparently there has been some discussion regarding changing the name of W. T. Woodson High School.

We, the W. T. Woodson High School community, would like to let you and the Fairfax County School Board know that we are very much opposed to this idea.

Changing the name of a building does not change history. All it does is make those of us who attended W.T. Woodson feel like there is something for which we should apologize. W. T. Woodson has always been one of the tops schools in the country not only for academic excellence, but also for the caliber of students she puts forth into the world.

We have long since moved past the history of Mr. Woodson’s actions or beliefs. We have taken his name and made it our own. Now the name W.T. Woodson is synonymous with the words; excellence, commitment, inclusiveness, pride and community.

Changing our school’s name would result in only one thing, whitewashing our collective history. And from that, nothing is learned.

Sincerely,

The W. T. Woodson High School community
