AGAINST MEDICAL AND DENTAL PG FEE HIKE-KARNATAKA
Why this petition matters
To
The Hon’ble Minister for Medical education
Government of Karnataka
Bangalore.
Respected Sir,
Sub: Reg steep hike in fees of medical and dental PG courses
When the whole nation is reeling under Corona lock down, It is very much unfortunate that the Karnataka state Government has resorted to exorbitant fee hike for Post Graduate medical and dental seats. In private medical colleges - the Fees of Government quota seats has been increased from Rs.5.8 lakh per annum to Rs. 7.13 lakh; that of private seats have been increased from Rs.8.7 lakh to Rs.11.5 lakh! Whereas, the fees of Government seats in Govt. colleges had been hiked nearly 5 times in 2019 itself. Now it stands at Rs.1.13 lakh!
Governments have been increasing fees every year and consequently medical education has become unaffordable for a vast section of meritorious students coming from poor and lower middle class families. Many poor and meritorious students are being denied higher education because of the policies which are aimed at commercialization and commodification of medical education and the health care sector. Further, this decision has been taken at a time when the entire country is reeling under severe economic recession and Covid pandemic. When the grim financial situation has made the life miserable, this fee hike has come like a bolt from the blue. It once again reiterates the fact that state government is more interested to serve the needs of the money hungry private managements and it has least concern towards the plight of our people.
The Karnataka State Committees of AIDSO (All India Democratic Students' Organisation) , MSC (Medical Service Centre) and Medical & Dental students of Karnataka urge upon the government to:
1. Immediately withdraw the exorbitant fee hike in Medical & Dental PG Courses. Rollback the fees of PG Seats to affordable level.
2. Ensure adequate infrastructure facilities and Increase the number of PG seats in all Government Medical and Dental colleges.*
3. Introduce a Central and State Legislation to ensure that in all private professional colleges (a) all seats shall be brought under government quota to be distributed on the basis of merit and (b) the Fee Structure shall be within the reach of a common man.
Thanking you,
Yours sincerely,
