Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease that is inherited by a child when the mother and the father are both carriers of the defective CF gene.  Shockingly, most women (and men) do not know they are carriers of the disease until AFTER they are pregnant when they are offered a blood test or, even more upsetting, AFTER their child is born and suffers unexplained illnesses (that are often times misdiagnosed for years).

There is a simple solution to this devastating issue. If young women were tested for CF the first time they were seen by an OB-GYN, they would be armed with the necessary knowledge to make informed and educated decisions regarding family planning. Frankly, because the test isn’t offered until you are already pregnant, you are stripped of the ability to protect your unborn child.

Knowledge is truly power. If you know you are a carrier of the defective CF gene early in your life, you can ensure that your partner is tested and can plan accordingly. Every OB-GYN should be required to inform their patients of the disease and offer a test during the first visit with a new patient. This will save lives.
