Investigate suspicious activity in the Halifax Taxi and Limousine Industry
This petition had 32 supporters
Investigate motives and incentives behind creating, encouraging, and protecting the sweat shop in Halifax (HRM) Taxi Industry. Some of these drivers have paid so far over $50,000 in the grey market for leasing roof lights [taxi owner licenses]. They feel voiceless, helpless, exploited and intimidated. To survive, working 12 to 16 hours every day is very stressful. Two taxi drivers committed suicide. Police are kept at bay. The names and total number of these license holders in the sweatshop are kept secret, not released even after requesting it under the Access to Information Act. It appears Halifax (HRM) Council is in the process of handing over the control of the taxi industry, worth millions of dollars, to the special interest groups, leading to modern economic slavery in the 21st century.
