Where is it?
The water vole can be found near lakes, rivers, ponds, ditches, streams, canals, marshes, reedbeds and wet moorlands. They are under serious threat due to habitat-loss and predation by another animal like it called the non-native American mink.

Why is it important?
Water voles burrow underground and create tunnels. This dries out the soil leading to something happening and nitrogen being more available for plants to use as an important part of their growth. More plants grow faster, and more oxygen is spread.

Is it endangered?
YES! With a mixture of aspects this species is under severe threat and could become extinct in the UK if a change is not made.
