Dear LSUS students and staff, it is coming from a place of concern within me that starting the year back on campus during this pandemic is an ensured mistake that will effect us. Not only is it a risk in and of itself, but it seems even more uncertain when you realize that there's still a lot that we don't know about this disease and are still figuring out. Need I remind you of some things:

1) The number of cases has not gone down, but has gone up. Face-to-face classes were suspended last semester on March 16th of this year. At that time around 4,500 cases had been confirmed in the U.S. Now, there have been over 4 million confirmed cases and the number will continue to get higher. The school was quick to act when switching to online classes in March but now, when it's absolutely not safe campus is expected to open.

2) We already know there are confirmed cases in Caddo Parish.

3) There is no guarantee we will get and/or spread the virus, but there is no guarantee we won't. That doesn't make me feel safe, but especially not when you realize there are jobs we need to go to, errands we need to run, and so on. Those things are mandatory and I realize we can't all stay home forever. But having class on campus doesn't have to be a mandatory thing.

4) The LSUS fall reopening plans mention taking a temperature scan every day and giving a sticker to those who don't show symptoms. While this assured me a bit about the situation, I know that everyone exhibits different reactions to illnesses. My father's job requires him to do a daily COVID test. He, along with most of his co-workers tested positive back in July. My father was not symptomatic however; no fever, no breathing difficulties, no cough, nothing. Not to mention that some people don't start showing symptoms until days or weeks after the infection, ample amount of time for the infection to spread to others.

5) I hate to be the one to say it, but I believe not everyone on campus will adhere safely and take the safety protocol seriously. I wish it weren't the case then maybe the numbers could be significantly lower in the U.S. than they are now.

Quite frankly, I hate online classes. I've found that it's a format that's not for me. However, if it greatly reduces the risk of spreading the virus- even to just one of my fellow students or a staff member, I'll find great comfort in that thought. I'm still a member of this community and I love our school, which is why I believe this is important. Anyway I have it, I'm a Pilot for life. Reducing the spread is important if we want to go back to having a school life that's worth living. I say that especially to the freshmen starting this year who can't take advantage of all our school has to offer, even with the protocols and conducts in place. And to the professors I've come to love so much, I want to continue to have my knowledge shaped by you. I've met some amazing people during my time. I don't regret choosing LSUS, and because of that, I want to look out for the students who've made it so memorable. Thank you for taking the time to read this, it means everything. I care about our lives, and I hope you do too.
