Demand Safer Working Conditions for MDining Workers

To the University of Michigan community,

We write to you as student workers at the University of Michigan's dining halls and cafés. We are on the front lines of food service and interact with hundreds of students per day. Due to COVID-19, MDining student workers' health and wellbeing are directly at risk. Already, one MDining worker tested positive for COVID-19 - yet the University remains silent. Despite multiple attempts to speak with MDining administration since the beginning of the semester, MDining refuses to provide us with adequate personal protective gear, paid sick or quarantine leave, or a guarantee of severance pay when on-campus cafes and dining halls close again due to a growing outbreak.

We, the undersigned, call on the MDining administration, specifically Michigan Dining Senior Director Steve Mangan to meet with MDining student workers by October 6, 2020, in order to provide MDining workers with the following:

Testing once per week, and mandatory testing for all workers at a location with a positive case
Four weeks of paid sick leave annually
If dining halls are closed, severance pay for the remainder of the academic year
Transparency around any planned post-Thanksgiving dining hall closures, and pay during the remainder of the semester
Transparent and timely contact tracing
Clear and consistent COVID policies for all units
Adequate sanitizing equipment and PPE (e.g., the PPE provided to the RAs)

Thank you for your support.
