McMaster Graduate Student Mental Health Funding

This petition had 86 supporters

This petition is asking that the new mental health service fees for McMaster graduate students (GSA Members) in 2017-18 be added to new and existing funding packages.

In April 2017, McMaster graduate students (GSA Members) voted for a return of on-campus mental health counselling services. We also voted to add a mental health hotline to our existing insurance plan. The total annual cost of both plans combined is $81.58.

The voter support for these services shows their importance to the graduate student community. Access to mental health services is critical for preventing suicide and self-harm. Mental health services are also needed to manage mental illness, mental distress, and overwhelming emotions.

While these services are important, the increase in fees adds to the cost for graduate students to attend McMaster University.

The goal of this petition is to ask the faculties, departments, and programs that fund graduate students to add this new cost to the funding packages for all new and returning students in 2017-18. By offsetting the cost of these services, the departments will show that they are making student health and success a priority. The additional funding of $81.58 provided to graduate students will guarantee that no student has to deal with an additional cost that makes paying rent or buying food difficult.

The benefits of access to diverse mental health services are undeniable.  Graduate students face unique stressors that they should not fell they have to face alone.

The success of graduate students contributes to the success of their departments, and the university in general. By supporting their graduate students in this way, faculties, departments, and programs, can help ensure that every graduate student has the opportunity to succeed.
