McMaster University has expressed to students its plans to return to full in-person learning by February 7 despite the threat that the Omicron variant poses to the student population. This transition is ableist in light of the pandemic and the increasing cases; it does not take into account the health issues that many McMaster students face, as well as those that live with immunocompromised family members. Hamilton hospitals run the risk of being overwhelmed by COVID-19 cases and there is a shortage of tests. This creates an unfavourable environment for learning as transmission would be more likely if students do not know if they are positive or not. Moreover, it is alarming that Ontario's case numbers do not reflect the full severity of the spread of COVID in the province. At the very least, the university should make in-person optional to protect the health of students and those that they reside with.
