McMaster University has an undergraduate student population of 26,780 and is also one of the 5 largest employers in Hamilton However, transportation options to and from campus are limited by reliability, costs, and accessibility. While biking is a low-carbon, active, and affordable option, barriers to bike ownership still exist. Interestingly, while Hamilton has a bike share program that has been widely adopted by the city’s residence, uptake by McMaster students has been modest. From student research, barriers to adoption include cost, inconsistent access to bikes, and limited number of on-campus bike parking hubs.

Students at McMaster University have increasingly limited access to reliable and affordable modes of transportation. HSR buses are often overcrowded and unreliable parking is expensive, spaces are limited, and student lots are far away from campus. Walking and biking are viable options; however, not all students have access to and/or can maintain their own bike. Additionally, bike thefts continue to be an issue. The local bike share program, SoBi, has been very successful across the city, but an annual membership costs $79.10 annually for 60 minutes of daily ride time. While this cost is still much less than purchasing and maintaining a personal bike, it may be a barrier to students who are financially constrained.

We care that students have access to healthy, affordable, and reliable transportation options. We know that active travel is a low-costs mode of travel, supports physical and mental health, and helps to foster vibrant communities. Therefore, we would like to launch a SoBi Referendum in winter 2019 that would provide bike share memberships to all undergraduate students. Each membership would enable students to ride for 90 minutes/day, for an annual fee of only $16.95. Students will be able to opt-out of the program if they wish, which is similar to many other student fees. In order to register for the SoBi Referendum, we need at least 804 signatures from students who are members of the McMaster Student Union.
