We reject the proposal to spend $215 000 of our student fees paid to the MSU on an end-of-year party. This represents a nearly 25% increase to the current annual budget for campus events Campus Events (including homecoming, frost week, other concerts, all MSU events, and welcome week) in one party. In terms of dollars it is equal to half of 1280's annual wage costs, 1/3 of Union Markets annual sales, and $68,000 more than we spend supporting ALL of our clubs combined. After spending $215,000 of student fees on the concert, tickets will be sold to students for $20.00 each to bring the total projected event cost from student fees to $90,000.
In addition to the difficulties many students will face in attending this event (including financial barriers, final projects, exams, and preparing to move), there are hundreds of better ways this money could be spent to support students, their ideas, and their projects. This event has been hailed as a 'gamechanger' for McMaster - there are more important things to us, as McMaster students, than throwing the biggest party.
