Why this petition matters

Started by Elia Foster

In the 2019-2020 season, the McGill Symphony Orchestra (MGSO) programmed works by sixteen different composers. One work was written by a white woman and the remaining fifteen works were written by white men heavily embedded in the Western Music tradition.

I am calling on the Schulich School of Music to diversify their programming by including more works by people of color.

McGill University's Schulich School of Music has stated that it has three goals to :

  1. Diversify our community by implementing strategies to recruit underrepresented populations
  2. Improve equity, diversity and inclusion in personal awareness and practices
  3. Enhance the diversity of repertoire, curriculum and teaching modalities

This internationally renowned university is sitting idly by and perpetuating years of injustice by silencing the voices of historically underrepresented musicians. Stating that the university is working to "Enhance the diversity of repertoire..." is an empty statement when the university's most famous and well-attended performing group fails to follow through on this statement.

The Schulich School of Music should follow in the footsteps of the Manhattan School of Music, who has pledged to program works by "African American creators or those from the African diaspora".
