Let me tell you a story first.
A few days back my Twitter timeline was showing me a promoted tweet that “McDonald’s is going to ditch plastic straws in UK” . Let me also tell that that McDonald’s took this action after this SumofUs petition. I saw this tweet multiple times and it made me thinking. I thought, they have finally decided to eliminate it. I went to McDonald’s India website if they have any information on this but nothing. Nada.
So, I thought to approach them as It’s very confusing to me that once one nation wants you to stop using plastic straws, Why would you not follow the same process for all countries where you have your outlets.
The conversation went like this.
Me: So, @mcdonaldsindia Why don't you learn from your other sibling branch in UK and roll out paper straws to all India restaurants? When the planning is done once, it should be easy to roll out worldwide? Right @McDonaldsUK @mcdonaldsindia ?
McDonaldsIndia Twitter Handle (@mcdonaldsindia): We would like to inform you that we have already opted for the Eco-friendly measures.
Me: I would also appreciate if you can direct me to the press release which mentions your said efforts as I couldn't find anything on your website.
I haven’t heard anything back from them after this interaction. I tried searching for a press release or anything that tells me the same. Couldn’t find anything.
Then I did a personal poll with my friends and family as I am currently not in India. People told me that McDonald’s has stopped using plastic straws especially in Mumbai area but with McDelivery this practice is not available. They send plastic straws if you order for delivery. Also, McDonald’s is still using plastic straws in restaurants outside Mumbai.
Hence, I urge them to STOP using plastic straws in every restaurants across India. I ask them to make this contribution and take this step for the Marine life as all this plastic ends up in our oceans and if we continue at this rate, prediction is that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans.
Why am I petitioning to McDonald’s only?
Because, They chose to show promoted tweet to me and I am literally baffled with the reply that they have opted for eco-friendly measures. Maybe they thought that I would stop questioning after reading that tweet.
Also, When they are rolling the no-plastic-straws policy in UK, Why can’t it be done in India?
Why should you care?
Because, You would not like to add to plastic pollution. This planet already has enough. Read We’re drowning in plastic by National Geographic to know how We are creating a plastic trash crisis.
From millions of tonnes of plastic in our oceans to killing of animals. From the smog covered skies in India to impacts of climate change across the World, We are making this planet suffer. We are also making our future generations suffer.
For our personal gains, We often forget that We share this beautiful planet with other non human living beings and We have no right in any capacity to take their natural habitat from them.
- Over 80% of freshwater species and 50% of land species have declined over the last 30 years
- We’ve lost 1.3 million km2 of forests since 1990—an area larger than South Africa.
- An enormous amount of plastics has been dumped in the world’s seas with estimates of 46,000 pieces of plastic per square mile.
- 1.1 billion people lack access to water and 2.4 billion don’t have adequate sanitation.
- Today, 7.3 billion people consume 1.6 times what the earth’s natural resources can supply.
- We produced 448 million tons plastic in 2015
I have no personal gains involved in this. Also,I can’t do it alone. I need your help. So, Please sign this petition to save this planet from plastic. Sign it because you don’t want your future generations to suffer. You want them to experience the nature’s beauty around us.
