Ban the use of plastic straws by McDonald’s
Why this petition matters
As a society, we are becoming increasingly aware of the negative impacts the use of plastic straws is having not only on our environment but on our precious marine wildlife. For a massive company such as McDonalds to still be using plastic straws, is a huge step backwards in our efforts to make our environment a healthier and safer place.
Approximately 1.8 billion straws are used by the company a day. Although the company claims that it’s current plastic straws are recyclable, if not disposed of correctly, they wind up in our oceans etc. where each straw takes hundreds of years to breakdown. Becoming a hazard to marine life. As of today, the UK is the only country to have McDonald’s restaurants switch from plastic to paper straws. Despite the paper straws being better for the environment with less breakdown time, the materials, once used, are unable to be recycled and are required to be put into general waste.
100,000 marine creatures a year die from plastic related ingestion with plastic straws being the main culprit. As well as over 1 million seabirds die each year from ingesting plastic. And these are just the ones found.
Please help support me in encouraging not only the vital transition from plastic to paper straws by McDonald’s restaurants in all countries, but also the development of a much needed effective waste processing method to be put into place so that the paper straws once used are able to be effectively recycled.
